David Granick (1912 - 1980) was a photographer who lived in the East End his whole life. His colour slides laid untouched until 2017 when a local photographer, Chris Dorley-Brown, examined them at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives.

Following our hugely popular The East End in Colour 1960-1980 by David Granick, this new book by a different photographer, Tim Brown, picks up the story in 1980 as East London enters an extraordinary decade of transformation. Focusing on the Docklands and the further reaches of the East End, Tim took these pictures on 35mm film between shifts of driving trains on London Underground's Central Line.
Tim began taking photos in 1980, around the same time that he started a 20-year stint working on London Underground. He was a Central Line train driver for 13 years and lived in East London for over 20 before moving to Essex with his wife and two children. The book features an introduction by Chris Dorley-Brown, editor of the book, and an interview between Chris and Tim.

Once left in a car, for a short while as a young kid, Martin remembers the feeling that no-one might come back. Around about the same time he identified and fell in love with dogs - they were also silent, just as he felt in the car. A few decades later the two memories fused into this strangely melancholic but also subtly humorous project.
These cinematic photographs of dogs in cars, taken mostly at night, reveal an emotional honesty that only animals can express. Behind the dogs’ eyes are feelings that humans so often avoid: the fear of being alone, the uncertainty
of the unknown, but also a certain hope that can be found in silence.

Chris Dorley-Brown spent two summers in the mid-1980s photographing drivers stuck in traffic jams in and around East London. This series was his first on colour film and was created when he intended to document the privatisation of Rolls Royce but instead became fascinated by the faces in the traffic caused by the sell-off in the city. The cars, colours, haircuts and expressions of frustration capture the mood and tone of a unique era in Thatcher's Britain.
The images, all shot on film of course, have aged like a fine wine and are now ready to be consumed by the discerning connoisseur.
Chris Dorley-Brown’s family has lived in Hackney and Bethnal Green for nearly 200 years. His great-great-grandfather worked as a herbalist near Well Street and subsequent ancestors have included hat makers, ambulance drivers, publicans, landladies, layabouts, lightermen and aldermen. The inspiration for Chris’s pictures and films are the people and places, friends and family he has encountered in this ever-changing and challenging environment.
